Since 2020, RECONOMY has been operating in the Eastern Partnership (EaP) region and the Western Balkans to promote an inclusive green economy. It focuses on creating jobs, reducing poverty and promoting social equity through environmental sustainability.

This case study is part of RECONOMY's inception phase in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and North Macedonia.

Intervention description

The interventions focused on waste management and renewable energy. For instance, in North Macedonia, RECONOMY partnered with REDI Recycling to formalise informal waste collectors, providing training and proper infrastructure such as electric tricycles and waste bins. This initiative included training seven individuals from the Roma community who became formal waste collectors with better pay and access to social benefits.

Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia are undergoing an energy transition. These regions have a great deal of potential for renewable energy and improving energy efficiency, but lack the awareness, skills and training. RECONOMY facilitated the design and implementation of a pilot intervention called 'Energy transition for income and employment'. It's objectives are to promote the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency for sustainable development and to raise the awareness of civil society and decision-makers of the potential of renewable energy and efficient use of energy.

Additionally, in the South Caucasus, RECONOMY collaborated with local educational institutions and businesses to provide training on energy-efficient installations, such as PVC windows and doors.

This programme’s results measurement system underwent a pre-audit review using the DCED Standard.
