The Promoting Rural Income through Support for Markets in Agriculture (PRISMA) program is a market systems development initiative operating in six provinces of Eastern Indonesia: East Java, Central Java, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Papua, and West Papua.
This report outlines PRISMA'S semester progress against the previous annual plan and outlines the annual plan for 2023.
PRISMA aims to achieve rural growth through the private sector to alleviate poverty for smallholder farmers and put Indonesia in a better position to improve its food security. The programme's investments seek to change how the private sector does business in rural Indonesia so that smallholder farmers can increase their farm productivity.
PRISMA reports excellent progress against the market system strategies (MSS) this semester. Not all sectors are progressing at the same rate. The 2-year COVID-19 pandemic and other external shocks, such as livestock disease and the war in Ukraine, delayed progress in the newer sectors such as finance and ICT, where there was an entire strategy reboot.
This has led to different pace towards achieving systemic change. Significant progress has been made in influencing policy change at the national level in the beef and dairy sectors, which has contributed to PRISMA changing the face of the cattle feed market in Indonesia.
Intervention description
PRISMA implemented several interventions focusing on improving market systems in various agricultural sectors across six provinces in Eastern Indonesia.
Notable interventions included working with beef and dairy feed companies to introduce new standards, promoting hybrid seed usage among maize farmers, and supporting the distribution of quality vegetable seeds. These interventions aimed to enhance productivity and market access for smallholder farmers. For instance, the beef feed team collaborated with the Ministry of Agriculture to launch new national standards for cattle feed, and in the dairy sector, PRISMA supported the import and breeding of Jersey cows to improve milk productivity and quality.
This programme’s results measurement system has passed an audit against the DCED Standard.
