This case study from PRISMA - a partnership between the Governments of Indonesia and Australia - examines how a market systems approach can support climate-smart agriculture in Indonesia’s cattle sector.

It focuses on PRISMA’s collaboration with AgCoTech Australia to introduce emission control blocks (ECBs) - nutrient supplements that enhance cattle productivity while reducing methane emissions. The partnership helped adapt AgCoTech’s model to the Indonesian context through pilot trials in Central and East Java, engaging universities, local firms and farmers.

Results showed up to an 18 per cent reduction in methane and improvements in cattle health, reproduction and milk yield.

The study demonstrates how private-sector innovation, supported by research and partnerships, can contribute to both productivity and emissions reduction, providing a model for sustainable livestock development.
