This case study forms part of a series of analyses of RisiAlbania’s market systems interventions in Albania’s ICT, Tourism and Agricultural sectors.
This case study looks at the work that RisiAlbania is undertaking in partnership with national tour operators looking to develop ‘sustainable tourism’ off the beaten track that will generate employment for small local businesses.
The report highlights why such tourism can be ‘pro-youth’ in countries like Albania by avoiding the insecurity that seasonal tourism generates.
It looks at tourism's potential to create economic benefits and employment whilst also supporting environmental protection through eco-tourism and cultural preservation.
Intervention description
RisiAlbania partnered with several proactive national tour operators to develop niche sustainable tourism in Albania. These interventions included supporting tour operators such as Albania Trip, Sondor Travel, Off Limits Albania, Ecotour Albania, and others to create and market new tourism products.
The activities focused on product development, capacity building for local tourism service providers, and marketing of new travel products. The project provided technical support and co-financing to develop and implement these new tourism offerings, targeting innovative tour operators willing to invest time and effort in developing new destinations and experiences.
Partners responded positively, adopting the new models and expressing confidence in their commercial success.
This programme’s results measurement system underwent a pre-audit review using the DCED Standard.
