This report summarises the findings of the market systems resilience (MSR) assessment conducted by Vikāra Institute for Feed the Future Ethiopia Transforming Agriculture activity.

The assessment examined key structural and behavioural characteristics of target agricultural market systems across five geographic clusters in Ethiopia: Northern, Tana, Lowlands, Southern and Jimma Clusters.

It found that Ethiopia’s agricultural market systems are increasingly fragile due to conflict, market instability and weak policy support. Kinship networks dominate risk management but are weakening. Regional resilience varies, with Jimma showing strength while Northern regions are in survival mode.

Market-based coping is emerging slowly, highlighting the need for tailored, context-sensitive interventions.
