The Market Systems Analysis (MSA) Toolkit is a practical guide for organisations, consultants and donors working in market systems development (MSD).
Originally commissioned by USAID under the Market Systems and Partnerships (MSP) Activity, it was later re-edited and published as a BEAM Exchange resource after the MSP’s closure.
The toolkit focuses on helping practitioners apply a ‘good enough’ approach to undertake an MSA efficiently in a way that prioritises systemic intervention areas and ongoing iteration and learning as a programme evolves.
It provides specific guidance for donors, outlines adaptations for different contexts and sectors such as employment, entrepreneurship, tourism and agriculture, and emphasises embedding gender and climate considerations across all analyses.
It is particularly useful for planning MSAs, selecting methods, interpreting findings and designing strategies that lead to sustainable, scalable and meaningful systemic change.
The toolkit includes a number of tools that have hitherto been unpublished, remaining on organisational cloud storage systems unavailable to the wider MSD community.
