GROW aimed to support the development of markets and value chains in agriculture to contribute to sustainable peace and poverty reduction through inclusive and integrated economic development.

This review assesses the programme's progress from 2013 to 2018. It examines the effectiveness, impact and sustainability of interventions in cocoa, rubber, oil palm and vegetable sectors, providing recommendations for future improvements and continuation of the programme.

Intervention description

Specific interventions included providing technical assistance to farmers, developing and promoting new business models and facilitating market linkages.

For example, the programme worked with Africa Venture Liberia (AVL) to improve cocoa quality and establish UTZ certification, which aims to increase farmer incomes through better prices for certified products. The programme also supported spray service provision models and engaged with cooperatives to enhance productivity. However, some interventions faced challenges, such as financial partner withdrawals, which impacted their sustainability and scalability.
