Strengthening Host and Refugees Populations in Ethiopia Programme (SHARPE) works to inclusively and sustainably empower refugees and host communities in Ethiopia to become more economically resilient.

This factsheet looks at SHARPE's work in the Gambella region of Ethiopia to establish a commercial poultry industry.

The Gambella region in south-western Ethiopia is home to approximately 380,000 refugees from South Sudan. Prior SHARPE, there was almost no commercial poultry production in the region, representing a lost economic opportunity.

SHARPE's work focuses on the following problems:

  • a lack of capital
  • a lack of appropriate business models
  • a lack of poultry management knowledge
  • a lack of access to feed and vaccines
