After seven years with CASA, it’s nearly time to say goodbye.
Like all good development programmes, CASA always had an expiry date. Still, endings are strange things. They’re a little like leaving a party just as the music gets good…you want to linger, but you also know it’s better to bow out while people are still glad you came.
I must remember that while CASA the programme ends, the real story doesn’t. The partners we’ve worked with, the businesses we’ve nudged, the ideas we’ve tested…they’re all still out there, singing and dancing.
In fact, many of them are expanding in ways that remind me why this work matters in the first place. That success isn’t about us. It’s about whether others keep partying and new guests keep arriving…
With nearly 100 relationships with agri-SMEs, we know that a good exit isn’t an ending; it’s the moment you step back and realise that the ripples are spreading, with or without you.
Of course, there were countless smaller wins along the way…those first hesitant pilots that grew into business-as-usual, those unlikely partnerships that turned into genuine trust. But if there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s that how you leave the party matters just as much as how you showed up. It’s easy to overstay your welcome or even to ghost your partners, so we compiled some lessons on how to close responsibly.
How do you exit without leaving a mess behind?
Here are some of the truths I’ll take with me:
- Don’t wait until your coat is missing. Decide early how you’ll head home. Plan your exit at the start and get an Uber booked.
- It’s about the vibe, not the guest list. Trust and connection outlast the RSVP. Friendships come from chats in the kitchen and shared laughs.
- Dance with lots of people and think beyond your plus-one. A great party spreads, friends of friends join in, and suddenly it’s bigger than you. That’s scale.
- If the playlist changes, dance anyway. Stay flexible and go with the flow.
- Leave while the vibe continues and the dance floors still busy. And say your goodbyes properly. Hugs beat disappearing acts. Hand over the playlist and the mic. Let people know what’s next, ensure your hosts keep the music playing without you.
- Capture the highlights and share the stories and the photos. Future hosts and guests need the inspiration.
- Dance-floor sing-along counts just as much as the big speeches and grand champagne finale. Celebrate the small moments. Leave people smiling, ready to host the next party.
- Keep track of your stuff — no lost bags, no broken glasses, no unpaid tabs. A good guest tidies up on the way out, so the host isn’t left with the mess. Leave it better than you found it.
- Look back before you leave and reflect on the party– was it memorable, meaningful…was it a night worth repeating?
So yes, I’m closing a chapter. But the story carries on in Uganda, in Rwanda, in Nepal, in Malawi, in Ethiopia…wherever CASA partners are continuing to innovate, adapt, and inspire others to follow suit.
And that, to me, is the real happy ending: knowing that the party continues, even when we’ve left the room.
