Drawing on two WIN programme surveys conducted in 2024 with women smallholder farmers in Nampula, Niassa and Zambezia provinces, this study examines savings behaviour, credit demand, digital wallet use and financial management, supported by a literature review and comparative case studies from sub-Saharan Africa.
It finds that village savings and loan associations are the dominant mechanism for both saving and borrowing among women, that 85 per cent of respondents have considered a farm loan yet only 1 per cent have accessed formal credit, and that men retain substantially more control over business earnings than women.
Case studies from ZANACO, Diamond Bank, Green World, Opportunity International and CARE illustrate how financial service providers and MSD programmes elsewhere have addressed similar constraints.
The report concludes with detailed recommendations on product design, distribution, communication and partner sequencing.
