The FORESITE programme (2019 to 2023) aimed to strengthen community resilience, enhance food security and reduce forced displacement in South Sudan. Implemented across Lakes, Warrap, and Western Bahr el Ghazal states, it targeted 21,826 beneficiaries.
This paper assesses market systems and value chains in four South Sudan counties to enhance food security and resilience. It highlights key findings on agricultural practices, challenges and opportunities.
Farmers primarily grow sorghum, maize and groundnuts and rear goats, cattle and chickens. Major issues include pests, inconsistent rainfall, and limited access to inputs, with low literacy levels among farmers compounding these challenges.
Programme interventions improved yields and incomes through training in agronomy, post-harvest management and market-oriented production.
Recommendations focus on enhancing local training, addressing infrastructure gaps and fostering cooperative development to strengthen market systems and boost economic stability.
