This is an intervention summary from the MSD for employment (MSD4E) landscape assessment which was undertaken by the MSD4E Community of Practice and funded by the ILO, Mercy Corps and Swisscontact. It is based on self-reported information from individual MSD programmes, reviewed and compiled in a common structure to enable learning across the field of MSD4E.
CEDIS aims to reform the waste management market so that it becomes a viable and safe employment opportunity for waste pickers.
This requires changing local by-laws to legalise the operation of private waste pickers and aggregators, and to make land available to aggregators. Aggregators also need to adopt new business models that increase trust, safety, information flow and reliability with waste pickers.
If successful, this can drive a competitive waste management sector that creates better quality opportunities for workers.
