A central premise of market systems development is that it delivers more sustainable outcomes than alternative approaches.
This webinar put that premise to the test, drawing on ex-post evaluations from three MSD programmes in Bosnia and Herzegovina (MarketMakers), Senegal (Naatal Mbay) and Ghana (ADVANCE II) .
Instead of delivering goods and services directly, or leading reform efforts themselves, MSD programmes work as facilitators, supporting actors in the market to adopt new innovations and practices, take on new roles and relationships, and advocate for reform. The idea is that once the project ends, market actors will continue to deliver and scale-up these efforts without the need for on-going donor support.
Whilst it is possible to collect emerging evidence of sustainability and scale during the lifetime of the programme, the real test is what happens after it ends.
- Did these programmes leave behind sustainable changes in the market, and what lessons can we draw?
- From the donor and evaluator perspective, we also explore the value of ex-post evaluations, why they are not more common, and the methodological challenges involved.
